Similarly, Liu and colleagues reported the anti-tumor and immune-modulating effects of H. erinaceus polysaccharides in mice with sarcoma 180, a type of malignant cancer. Further studies by Lee and colleagues showed that water-soluble polysaccharides from H. erinaceus activated macrophages, boosting nitric oxide production and cytokine expression, which contribute to its anti-cancer properties.

Kim and colleagues found that intraperitoneal injection of H. erinaceus extracts in mice significantly reduced tumor weight and enhanced natural killer (NK) cell activity. These extracts also restored nitric oxide production and phagocytosis in macrophages, increased the release of immune-regulating cytokines, and inhibited new blood vessel formation within tumors. The effectiveness of H. erinaceus extracts against human monocytic leukemia cells has also been demonstrated.

2. Cardiovascular Protection

H. erinaceus offers notable cardiovascular benefits. Research by Yang and colleagues on mice revealed that exo-biopolymer produced from H. erinaceus mycelium culture significantly reduced blood lipid levels. This biopolymer, at a dose of 200 mg/kg body weight, decreased total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and phospholipids, while increasing HDL cholesterol. Additionally, ethanol extracts of H. erinaceus improved lipid metabolism by stimulating lipid metabolism gene expression via PPAR-α activation. Mori and colleagues found that ethanol extracts of H. erinaceus inhibited collagen-induced platelet aggregation, identifying Hericenone B as an active compound against platelet aggregation.

3. Cognitive Improvement, Anxiety, and Depression Reduction

Lion's Mane has been shown to improve cognitive function, reduce anxiety, and alleviate depression. Mori and colleagues reported that ethanol extracts of H. erinaceus promoted the formation of new neurons. H. erinaceus also proved useful in preventing and treating dementia and cognitive impairment, as dietary supplementation with H. erinaceus powder prevented memory decline in mice induced by amyloid β(25–35) peptide. Clinical studies by Nagano and colleagues demonstrated that H. erinaceus intake reduced depression and anxiety in women during menopause. Another clinical trial by Mori and colleagues on individuals aged 50 to 80 with mild cognitive impairment found that H. erinaceus powder significantly improved cognitive function without adverse effects. Wong and colleagues' research indicated that H. erinaceus extracts could promote peripheral nerve regeneration in rats with nerve injuries.

4. Antioxidant Activity

H. erinaceus exhibits robust antioxidant properties, as reported by Abdullah and colleagues. Wong and colleagues found that mycelium extracts of H. erinaceus were rich in phenolic content and demonstrated significant antioxidant activity. Fresh fruit body extracts showed strong free radical scavenging activity. Additionally, dried fruit body extracts exhibited higher total phenolic content and antioxidant activity compared to fresh or freeze-dried extracts. This enhanced activity is likely due to the formation and accumulation of Maillard reaction products, known for their antioxidant properties. Han and colleagues' recent study revealed that H. erinaceus polysaccharides exhibited significant antioxidant activity, reducing oxidative damage in ischemia-reperfusion-induced kidney injury in animals.

5. Other Therapeutic Activities

H. erinaceus also offers various other therapeutic benefits. Methanol extracts from H. erinaceus were shown to protect against liver damage in mice induced by CCl4. Abdulla and colleagues reported the wound healing properties of H. erinaceus, with extracts enhancing wound healing in injured rats. Wong and colleagues noted the antimicrobial activities of H. erinaceus extracts, inhibiting the growth of bacteria such as Bacillus cereus, B. subtilis, Enterococcus faecalis, Salmonella sp., Shigella sp., and Plesiomonas shigelloides. Wang and colleagues demonstrated the hypoglycemic effects of H. erinaceus, showing that extracts reduced blood glucose levels in diabetic mice induced by streptozotocin.
